Sydney Penton Hughes

March 3, 1937 – May 26, 2023

Sydney Penton Hughes, a native and formerly a resident of Bogalusa, LA, passed away Friday evening surrounded by her family at Restoration Senior Living in Covington, LA at the age of 86. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Bogalusa, LA. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She was a nurse for many years and retired from the Bogalusa Charity Hospital.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her sons, Darryl Hughes (Lisa) and J. Lane Hughes (Mindy); her grandchildren, Justin Hughes (Megan); Katelin Varnado (Reed); Brenton Hughes (Sarah); Haley Buvens; host of great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gloria McKenzie. She is also survived by numerous other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Albert Dewitt Hughes; parents, Ruben and Evelyn Penton; sisters, Glenda Stringfield and Joyce McDaniel; brother, Robert Louis Penton.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at 3:45 P.M.  A visitation will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 2:00 P.M. until time of Memorial Service at 3:45 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Bogalusa, LA.
