Karen "KayKay" Lynn Barber Hoelzel, aged 58, passed away on April 11, 2024, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She was born on June 18, 1965, at Poplarville Hospital in Poplarville, MS. Karen was a beloved Pastor's wife, teacher, and mother known for her infectious joy and beautiful smile.
She served as a dedicated educator in Mississippi, retiring after 27 years of service in the Poplarville Separate School District and Pearl River County School District. Karen was an alumna of Poplarville High School, Pearl River Community College, University of Southern Mississippi, and William Carey University, where she earned a Master's Degree.
Karen worshipped at Crossroads United Pentecostal Church and was actively involved in various ministries, including serving as the K'Motion Kids Church Director, Minister of Music, Cleaning, Joy Group, and so much more.
In her leisure time, Karen enjoyed riding her motorcycle and convertible car, raising cattle which she took time to individually name, sewing, singing, and spending time with her cherished and only granddaughter, Lillian. She also treasured family vacations, especially cruise trips and visits to the Smoky Mountains.
Karen is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Rev. Christopher (Kirk) Hoelzel, her children Brennan Kirk Hoelzel (Jessica Hoelzel) and Breanna Hoelzel Johnson (Kade Johnson), her only and favorite granddaughter Lillian Khaleesi Hoelzel, her parents Dossie and Linda Barber, siblings Glenn and Angie Barber, Darwyn and Kerry Jarrell, Jason Barber, her sister-in-law whom she considered her sister Crystal and Adam Salas, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents J.C. and Audie Barber, maternal grandparents Walton and Murel Wheat, and her brother James Barber.
Services for Karen will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Crossroads United Pentecostal Church, with visitation starting at 9 AM for family, 10 AM for church family, and 12 PM for friends, followed by the funeral service at 4 PM. Donations and flowers can be sent to Crossroads United Pentecostal Church. Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa, LA, is assisting with the funeral arrangements.
